What is mat Pilates?
Mat Pilates is the original form of the method Joseph Pilates developed: a sequence of controlled, bodyweight exercises performed lying, sitting or kneeling on a mat. Without the springs of a reformer to assist you, your own core does the stabilizing, which is why mat work is so effective for deep abdominal strength, posture and spinal mobility. Props such as rings, small balls and resistance bands add variety and challenge as you progress.

Mat Pilates or Reformer Pilates?
Both train the same principles. Mat Pilates in Fort Myers at our studio relies on your own body weight, so it is the purest test of core control and the easiest place to learn good form. Reformer Pilates adds springs that can either support or resist a movement, which helps beginners feel the right muscles and gives experienced members more load. Most of our members do both, for example a mat class and a Reformer class each week. Read Pilates vs. Pilates Fusion for how our classes compare.
Who mat Pilates in Fort Myers is for
Mat Pilates suits almost everyone. Complete beginners like that there is no equipment to learn and every exercise can be scaled down. People with a stiff lower back or tight hips from desk work benefit from the focus on spinal mobility and deep core strength. Runners, golfers and tennis players use it to balance out one-sided, repetitive sports. And because it is low impact, it is a safe way back into exercise after a long break.
Because our mat Pilates classes in Fort Myers are small-group, your instructor can correct your form and offer modifications throughout the class. You never have to keep up with anyone else.
